My passion for painting and drawing is deeply rooted in my fascination with abstract representations of color, drawing inspiration from the intricate beauty of nature, the dynamic energy of cities, and the rich tapestry of cultures I've encountered through my travels. Influenced by my heritage, professional background in culinary arts, and diverse experiences abroad, my artistic journey is a blend of bold brushstrokes and a careful selection of mediums.
I employ a combination of oil and acrylic paints, often integrating non-paint materials onto canvas or board to enrich textures and deepen visual narratives. This approach allows me to translate vibrant memories and emotional landscapes into tangible forms. The vivid colors and textures in my artwork are reminiscent of the Sumatran Songket, a traditional woven silk fabric that mesmerized me in my youth. Its shimmering hues and bold patterns have become a metaphor in my art for the vivacious energy and cultural richness I strive to capture.
My career as a chef, including a stint at a Michelin-starred restaurant in NYC, has also profoundly influenced my artistic expression. Just as culinary ingredients are meticulously combined to evoke specific tastes and memories, I layer colors and materials to evoke emotions and trigger personal recollections. Each artwork becomes a visual recipe, blending spontaneity with structured composition to create an immersive experience for viewers.
Through large-scale canvases, I aim to establish a dialogue between viewer and artwork, inviting them to explore the depths of layered colors and forms. This interaction is a deliberate juxtaposition—creating both intimate moments of reflection and expansive visual narratives that unfold with each viewing. My creative process is a journey of discovery, where each painting reflects not only my state of mind and mood but also celebrates the freedom of expression through vibrant colors and textured surfaces.
In my drawings, I further explore complexity through collage, oil pastels, charcoal, and other mixed media. These pieces allow me to experiment with intricate textures and nuanced color palettes, creating works that resonate with personal and cultural significance. Ultimately, my art is a testament to the enduring connections between memory, sensation, and the visual language of color—a journey that continues to evolve with each canvas I create."
